Preparing your dog for winter

April 19, 2023by admin

Although winters in Sydney aren’t extremely cold, it can still be a bit chilly for our furry friends. As the temperature begins to drop in April, it’s important to start preparing your dog for winter. Here are some tips:

  1. Invest in warm bedding

Dogs lose heat through their paws and noses, so it’s important to provide your pet with a warm and comfortable place to sleep. Thicker beds, blankets, or a heated pads will keep your dog happy and snug.

  1. Protect your dog from the elements

Just like humans, dogs can be affected by cold winds, rain, and general elements. If you take your dog out for walks, protect them with a warm jacket or sweater, waterproof booties and even a cap.

  1. Groom your dog regularly

A well-groomed dog will have a healthier coat which will keep them warmer in colder temperatures. Regular grooming sessions help control shedding making it easier for your to regulate their body temperature in changing weather.

  1. Beware of ticks and fleas

Winter is also the season when ticks and fleas are most present so it’s important to keep your pet’s coat clean and to use  medications to avoid any problems.

  1. Adjust their diet

In winter, dogs can have a slow metabolism which reduces their required energy levels. At the same time, less physical activity may lead to potential weight gain. So adjusting their diet to provide more proteins, a higher calorie intake, and quality fats.

  1. Regular exercise

Humans exercise in winter and dogs need to as well. Exercises may include indoor games, agility courses indoors or outdoor walks with warm clothes suitable for the weather. So keep your dog active but don’t expose them to the cold weather for too long.

By adhering to the above you can ensure your dog stays warm, healthy and happy through winter. Pay attention to their needs and make changes as necessary to their diet, exercise, and grooming schedule to keep them comfortable in cooler temperatures.
